Derek's Experience

Derek served as a Penwith District Councillor and chaired the Overview and Scrutiny Committee. Derek also served on the Audit Committe and was Member Champion for Children and Young People.

Derek was a member of a county-wide Scrutiny Committee charged with monitoring the implementation of the proposed Unitary Authority in Cornwall.

Derek is the researcher and spokesperson for the St Ives Constituency Conservative Association. 

Derek is also the Chairman of the Cornwall Conservative Area Management Executive. 

About Derek

Derek worked as a Development Manager for a large voluntary organisation in Helston, Cornwall. He now run his own small business. Derek grew up in West Cornwall and, apart from living in South London for three years, has worked in the St Ives Constituency since leaving full-time education. Derek specialises in developing projects and initiatives designed to enable vulnerable people to gain greater independence. Community projects set up by Derek include an award-winning Fresh Vegetable Box Delivery Service and Survivealive, a residential activity providing outdoor adventure for hundreds of young people from accross Cornwall and beyond.

Derek left full-time education to complete a traditional Cornish Mason Apprenticeship. A change of career led to a period of study in South London and then a return to West Cornwall to take up employment within the voluntary sector.

Derek is a regular guest speaker at schools and community organisations.

Derek was born to missionary parents in 1972. Derek and his wife have a young two sons and are members of a local church. Derek believes this nation needs fresh leaders who are able to respond to the significant demands of our modern age. Leaders are needed to demonstrate how the quality of life can be improved for all people simply by maintaining healthy and stable communities that are prosperous at home and generous towards the world's poorest communities. Derek brings this fresh leadership in a challenging age.

Derek lead the bid to make Penzance a Fairtrade Town. Derek is a member of West Cornwall Healthwatch, an effective campaigning group defending healthcare provision in West Cornwall against cuts and centralisation.
