 | Conservatives celebrate all things Cornish at St. Buryan Community House |
 |
Local Conservatives hosted their annual Cornish Fair on Saturday, held at St. Buryan Community House. Cornish produce was on sale and included burgers and hot dogs provided and grilled by St. Ives Beef, ice cream from the Mermaid of Zennor and Knitwear from Atlantic Knitwear of St. Ives. The Fair also featured a Companion Dog Show, craft and trade stalls, children’s rides. There were live displays by the Newlyn Karate Club and music was provided by Hayle Town Band. Prizes for the Fair Raffle included a bottle of House of Commons Champagne, signed by Conservative Leader, David Cameron MP and cake celebrating St. Piran.
The Cornish Fair was opened by Derek Thomas, Conservative Candidate the St. Ives Constituency, who lives at St. Buryan with his young family. Derek said: “I am delighted that we held our Cornish Fair in St. Buryan this year. We have actively encouraged producers of Cornish products to attend, to provide a showcase for the wealth of talent in our County. Cornwall has a great tradition of shows and village fairs – these serve as reminders of how important it is to maintain strong communities.”
The winners of the Companion Dog Show are as follows:
Best In Show: Herbie, owned by Wendy Trazona
Reserve Best In Show: Monty, owned by Amanda Sullivan
Best Puppy: Crystal, owned by Lee Lyndon
Reserve Best Puppy: Teddy, owned by Dawn Sainsbury
Best Veteran: Jody, owned by Wendy Goodson.
Local charities were very much represented including the Penzance Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI), Penwith Scouts, Penzance Guides and Shelterbox of Helston, who brought several of their pre-packed disaster relief boxes and erected one of their tents to demonstrate what the money donated to them can achieve. Throughout the afternoon, Derek ran a charity car wash, to raise funds for Cornwall Hospice Care, including St. Julia’s at Hayle. Derek said: “Everyone in West Cornwall will know how important the work of St. Julia’s is. I felt that a car wash was a good way to enthuse younger volunteers to help, and a good way for us to raise funds for Cornwall Hospice Care. My thanks goes to the team at St Buryan Community House. This facility is used to raise thousands of pounds each year for local charities.”
Each year more than £5 million (£11 a minute) is needed to fund the services and support provided by Cornwall Hospice Care. Derek and his team raised £110, which was presented to representatives of Cornwall Hospice Care at the end of the Fair.
