An introduction to South Kerrier’s Localism Team from Cornwall Council took place at the Wesley Hall earlier this month. Matt Barton, West Cornwall Localism Manager was joined by Charlotte Chadwick, Community Network Manager and her assistant, Amy De-ath.
This public meeting was attended by many active members of the community and many local organisations were represented. Derek Thomas, Community Development Manager for Mustard Seed, gave a brief introduction and then handed the meeting over to the guests.
Matt Barton has been in post since April. Previously he was the head of Sustainable Development, Tourism and Leisure at Penwith District Council. During his presentation Matt talked of the need to take time to allow the new Cornwall councillors to establish the priorities for Cornwall and tthe local area and to engage with the many community groups that are already delivering aspects of the ‘localism’ agenda. He said the role of the Localism Team was to help the Helston and The Lizard achieve some of its aspirations such as the cattle market development, the Town Plan and better transport networks.
Charlotte Chadwick started her role along with Amy on June 8th and is based at the One Stop Shop in Isaac House. Charlotte was previously in post as the West Cornwall Business Network Coordinator for Cornwall Council. Charlotte referred to the projects she has helped with in her former role at Penwith District Council. The successful shop loyalty schemes in Penzance, St Ives and Hayle had helped to slow down the effects of the recession. Charlotte offered help to the local retailers to achieve the same for Helston. She added improved communication and better joined-up thinking within Cornwall Council would help Helston and the Lizard get a better deal from the new council.
Amy stressed that people could call in to the Isaac House for help. She stated her willingness for people to share ideas that would help the local community.
The public event was organised by the South Kerrier Alliance Community Wellbeing Group. Derek Thomas, who chairs the group, said “Everybody can be involved in the ‘Localism’ agenda. If we want to ensure that Cornwall Council’s service delivery is fit for local purpose than we have to be part of shaping the direction of the Community Networks. I was glad that we were able to meet Matt, Charlotte and Amy so early in the life of the council. Some exciting ideas were discussed and we want to help the newly elected Councillors in their task of making Cornwall Council work for South Kerrier”.
The Community Wellbeing Group meets on the second Tuesday of every month at the Isaac House at 4pm. For more information contact Derek on 07974 797754 |
